The Department of Consumer Affairs is a great place to check if you need a plumbing contractor. They will tell you if their licenses are all up to date or if they have received any negative feedback. If they don’t have a current license, you don’t want them working for you.

Check the floor and/or wall to see if any tiles are loose. Loose tiles could be an early sign that leaks have caused damage, so press against tiles gently to see if they “give”. If the tiles give you enough forewarning, you can repair the problem quickly, before it causes further damage.

If you have a toilet that is backing up, this can be from a blockage. If you have tried and cannot remove the blockage, you will need a plumber to come to your home and run the plumbing snake down into the toilet to clear the blockage.

During the coldest winter months, you should keep exposed pipes warm to avoid freezing. If the temperature is extremely cold, the pipes that are exposed will most likely start freezing. Even the pipes inside the home can freeze if they’re running from the outside. Make sure you keep a small heater or a heat lamp near the pipes so your water continues to flow.

Stringy and tough foods like celery, banana peels and chicken skin won’t grind well and clog the plumbing. Use the garbage can to store materials that the disposal can’t handle.

Ensure the toilet is free of any leaks. A good tip for this is to take food coloring and put a few drops in your toilet tank. Watch your toilet bowl closely, and if you notice colored water in a manner of seconds, you definitely have a leak that will need to be fixed.

As mentioned, there are a variety of plumbing problems, from small to large. When you use the ideas that you’ve just learned, you’ll find that dealing with plumbing problems is no longer a stressful ordeal.
