Different Ways to Clear Clogged DrainsClogged drains a common problem in most households and people always look for ways to avoid calling up a plumber as it proves quite expensive. However, there are ways through which one can unclog drains with the help of a few plumbing materials within a short span of time.

Cleaning Stoppers and Strainers

It is commonly observed in several households that clogs generally collect around the stopper or strainer in the bathtub or sink. Strainers can be easily removed with the help of some standard screwdriver and the clogs can be easily washed after removing it. Stoppers, on the other hand requires cleaning on daily basis. After removing them, the drain opening base should also be cleaned.

Using Plungers

Plungers are the most widely used plumbing equipments for unclogging drains. They can be used if the blockage is not that far into main drain. Application of petroleum jelly on the plunger rim assists with greater suction by creating tighter seal. The plunger needs to be forced down powerfully quite a few times till the blockage is clear. After clearing the blockage, hot water can be used for flushing away the remaining particles.

Unblocking the Trap

When the plunger proves to be ineffective then, cleaning the trap is definitely a good idea. Some traps have clean-out plugs whereas some do not have clean-out plugs. A bottle brush or coat hanger can be used to push out the debris from the trap. Penetrating oil can also be used if the blockage is stubborn in order to loosen it. After cleaning the blockage, the trap can be cleaned with soapy, hot water. The trap should also be checked for corrosion or wear.

Using Sewer Snake

When the trap has been cleared but, the blockage tends to persist then, the problem might be further into the main drain or drain pipe of the sink. In this case, plumbing equipment known as Sewer Snake can be used to get rid of the blockage. After removing the trap, the Sewer Snake needs to be inserted into the drain line till the obstruction is met with. The handle of the plumbing equipment can be twisted in clockwise direction and pushed back and forth till the clog is broken. After that, the pipe can be flushed with cold water.

Chemical Drain Cleaners

If the above mentioned methods do not prove to be effective then, using chemical drain cleaners can turn out to be the best solution. These plumbing chemicals contain high concentration of sulphuric acid or lye which can burn through all types of blockages within the drain pipes. However, before using these chemicals, it is always advisable to read the instructions thoroughly. After the drain blockage has been cleared, the drain pipes should be flushed with water so as to clean the chemicals.

Prevention of Clogged Drains

It is always better to avoid pouring thinner or paint within the drain. Stoppers in the sinks should be cleaned frequently and flushing of heavy paper products needs to be avoided at all costs.
